Tis the Season for Grants & Giving
GRATITUDE FOR OUR DONORS & PARTNERS IN EDUCATION
The generosity of our community allows the Spirit of 67 Foundation to fund amazing grants across all of our schools each year. During this time for giving thanks, we are very grateful for all of those families who have already donated this year. We’d also like to express our deepest gratitude to our 2016-17 Partners in Education, Lake Forest Pediatric Dentistry’s Dr. Joe Gordon and ULINE, as well as our President’s Circle Partner, The Grainger Foundation, for their continued support of our mission.
GRANT SEASON IS UPON US
Each year around this time teachers, students and parents across our district think big and take the first step to putting their innovative ideas into action in our schools by applying for Spirit grants. Information is gathered, educational dreams are put into words and the applications are submitted to our Grants Committee. Grant Applications are due January 26, 2017 at noon. From the end of January through March the committee meets two to three times a week to assess each grant based on its merits and alignment with our mission. The culmination of this work is Grant Day on April 12, 2017, when the grant awards will be announced across this district.
NEW DOROTHY CHANTLER FUND GRANTS
In honor of our founding president, Dorothy Chantler, a fund has been created as a means to address time sensitive and important opportunities that arise outside of the annual grant cycle. Anyone may apply for a grant from this fund, but the requests must be under $1,500 and must be time sensitive. All other grant requests should be submitted through the regular process. Each request must be reviewed and supported by the building principal and will then be evaluated by the Grants Committee to ensure alignment with the Spirit of 67 Foundation mission.

2016-17 Grants in Action
Students learning Mandarin at Cherokee elementary school recently received specialized instruction for the game of Weichi. As the students’ knowledge of the game develops, their language skills will increase as well as the higher level thinking skills necessary to strategize while playing Weichi.
Here's more about the game from weiqi.org.sg/Home/AboutWeiqi
Having developed in China between 3,000 and 4,000 years ago, Go (called Wei Ch'i in China and Baduk in Korea) contends with backgammon for the right to be called the oldest game still played in its original form. Today it is played by millions in Asia and thousands elsewhere. Weiqi is an intellectual but fun game. It is much more complex than the Chinese Chess, thus usually takes quite long to finish a game. A game of Weiqi can take as quick as 15 minutes and as long as days to finish. Weiqi helps to improve one's concentration, calculation, memory and creativity.

APT FINE ARTS ENRICHMENT PROGRAM 2016-17:
Barrel of Monkeys
Barrel of Monkeys is a writing curriculum focusing on facilitating creative expression. It was founded by two performers, Erica Halverson and Halena Kays, who also has a Ph.D. in Education and Social Policy. They based the methods of this program in research that shows that drama games work to improve the quality and consistency of writing and literacy skills and that stimuli provided through pictures, song, movement and play-acting are essential to child development. BOM teaching artists meet with each 4th Grade classroom for 1 hour to discuss the writing assignment, performance and writing strategies. They focus on group writing vs. individual writing, writing for performance and social and emotional confidence. Then the students continue to work on the pieces with their teachers and send them back to the actors once they are completed. Then in approximately 6 weeks- the actors return to perform the students pieces to the grade. This experience in writing for a variety of purposes and audiences ties well with the new Lucy Caulkins writing workshop the district has adopted.

WHY SHOULD YOU DONATE?
Spirit of 67 Foundation grants have a positive and lasting impact on Every Student in Every School, Every Day. Over the past thirty years in an effort to be true to our mission the Spirit of 67 Foundation has funded grants worth over $4 million benefitting our District 67 schools. Every year our students, teachers and parents come up with incredible ideas that have the potential to enhance learning in our schools. Your donations help us continue to bring those ideas to life. Every donation at every level is valued and appreciated. Donations from families like yours are critical so that we can continue to fund amazing grants for our schools. Donations can be made anytime.
Over the last 30 years the Spirit of 67 Foundation has awarded over $4 million in grants to our schools. These grants enhance your children’s education throughout their years in District 67. From curricular enhancements in language arts, science, math and social studies to new tools in technology, wellness, emotional wellness and world language, your contributions have a positive and lasting impact on Every Student in Every School, Every Day!
Rather than asking parents to participate in a variety of hands-on fundraising activities like candy sales, bake sales, wrapping paper or merchandise sales we simply ask that every District 67 family make a donation each year. We appreciate each and every family donation. There is a giving level for every family. Click below for recent changes to the 2016-17 donor benefits and giving levels.
We are always in need of people to serve on our event committees as well as dedicated volunteers to join our board of directors. If you are interested in learning more please check out our Get Involved page. There you will find job descriptions for all of our board positions as well as an online volunteer form. Feel free to reach out to Connie Hollingsworth, Nominating Committee Chair to express an interest or ask questions.
Grants in Action 2015-16 Highlights
It shall be the mission of the Spirit of 67 Foundation to raise funds and acquire resources to provide enriching educational and cultural experiences for the students, parents, faculty and staff of Lake Forest School District 67 that might not otherwise be provided.
Every Student in Every School, Every Day!
The Spirit of 67 Foundation has been partnering with our schools and having a positive and lasting impact on the educational experiences of our children since 1985. Over three decades the Spirit has awarded over $4 million in grants to provide resources and enriching educational and cultural experiences that touch every student in every school, every day.
The support of our families and community is critical to achieving our mission. We value EVERY donation we receive from district families because regardless of the amount it is an expression of support. Today approximately half of the Spirit’s revenues come from annual donations thanks to the generosity of our families.
